Tyler Dufford graduated from Cameron High School in 1953 and enrolled at Newberry College that fall. He lettered in football for the Indians in 1954, 1955 and 1956. In 1956, he was the leading rusher in the state of South Carolina and was second in total offense.

He was selected to the Little Three honor team and received honorable mention to the all-state team. He also lettered in baseball in all four of his years at Newberry. Tyler was instrumental in helping Newberry defeat the likes of The Citadel, Furman, Troy State, Appalachian State, Wofford and Presbyterian. His specialty was throwing the halfback option pass.

Tyler was elected as vice president of his freshman class and president of his senior class. He was a four year member of the Block N Club, a member of the Blue Key National Honor Fraternity and the Kappa Phi fraternity. He was the recipient of the W.L. Laval Athletic and Scholarship Award his senior year. He married Judy C. Cook of Mount Pleasant and has two daughters, Susan and Jennifer, who are both Newberry alumni. Tyler served for three years in the Army and spent 31 years in the South Carolina educational system as a teacher, coach and administrator. He was the principal of Branchville Elementary School for the last 13 years of his career.
