David entered Newberry College in the fall of 1970 as a highly recruited quarterback from Spartanburg High School. He was moved to corner back once fall practiced started and quickly established himself as one of the Indians top defenders. A 4 year starter in the defensive back field, David is the Newberry career leader in interceptions with 26. That number is the 6th highest number of interceptions ever recorded in college football.

During his sophomore season he was part of the Indians defense that intercepted 41 passes, a record that still stands in college football.David intercepted 10 of those passes which is a single season school record. That number also places him in a tie for sixth place in the college football record books. After intercepting 9 passes as a junior, David added 6 more interceptions during his senior campaign to become the career interception leader.

For his work on the football field David was named to the NAIA District 16 in 1971-72, and 73. He was also named to the Lutheran College All America team in 1972. Following the 1971 season David received the outstanding defensive back award. He also received the Jimmy Villeponteaux Sportsmanship award and was named an outstanding college athlete of the year. In the 1973-74 school year he was a 4 year letterman in the Block n Club in football and was a member of the baseball team in 1971.
