Ed was born in Salem, Ohio he came to Newberry College in 1933. He played baseball, track, and football. At the state track meet in 1933, he alone tied for first overall points and set pole vault record that stood for 23 years. Ed was All-State football in 1933 and 1934. In 1935, he was the leading scorer in the state. He was also the leading scorer on the basketball team and he batted .400. Ed was the captain of the football, baseball, and track team. He also played two years of tennis.
