After moving to defense as a strong safety, he intercepted 6 passes during the record setting 1971 season for a Newberry defense that saw the team establish a national pass interception record of 41 that still stands today. During his senior season he blocked five punts and intercepted an additional 5 passes to add to the two-year team total of 70 interceptions. This was instrumental in his being selected All-District (1971-1972), Newberry College Outstanding Back 1972 as well as receiving the Scalper award, All-Conference, All-State and Lutheran All American in 1972.

After a stint with the Oakland Raiders in 1974, he accepted a position as a teacher/coach and began a career in education that he enjoyed for 41 years. He served as a teacher/coach, head football coach (103-31 record), athletic director, high school Principal, Assistant Superintendent, and Director of Design and Construction.
