Lawrence played football from 1951-1954. He played tackle in the Elks Bowl which is the only Newberry bowl victory over Appalachian State. He received Honorable Mention on the All State football team that same year. He played baseball in 1952, 1953, and 1955. He was selected as a member of the South Carolina’s Baseball Champions team and was on the All State team in 1955. Lawrence was the leading hitter with a .400 batting average in 1952 and was considered the number #1 catcher among the colleges in South Carolina. He signed a baseball contract with Cleveland Indians in 1955 and was later signed to Lafayette Chiefs of the Missouri-Ohio Valley League. He hit .299 and in 1957 Carl played on the Army Baseball team. He won forty straight games and going to the World Series in 1964. Carl coached the Ribault High School team in Florida and led them to the first ever state tournament.
