Dennis Yarbrough made an impact on the Newberry football program beginning in the 1975 season at linebacker. The 6-1, 225-pound Scottdale, Georgia native was impressive in his first year in the South Atlantic Conference by earning a spot on the All-SAC second team. A three consecutive NAIA District 6 performer, Yarbrough’s first appearance came in 1975.

In 1976, Yarbrough only continued to improve with more accomplishments and accolades including his first career interception. Along with his NAIA District 6 honor, Yarbrough was named to the All-SAC first team, the All-South Carolina Team, the All-Lutheran second team, and was honorable mention for All-NAIA and the Little All-American teams.

In 1977, Yarbrough had his finest season with a three interception year and Dennis also scored a touchdown. Yarbrough was again named to the NAIA District 6 team, first team All-SAC, and the All South Carolina team, but was also named to the All-State team. Yarbrough’s accolades in his first three seasons earned him the title of team captain for the 1978 season. In a time when tackles were not a recorded statistic, Dennis Yarbrough was one of the most feared linebackers in the South Atlantic Conference.
