Rapphie, of Charleston, S.C., played freshman baseball and basketball in 1936. In 1937, he began to play varsity basketball. He was an all around athlete who made his mark in football by lettering in 1936, 37’, and 38’. He was team captain in 1938. He was selected First Team Little All-American in 1938 and also received Honorable Mention All-American on the legendary sports writer Grantlands Rice’s All-American Football team. This appeared in the Saturday Evening Post on December of 1938. For 66 years, he held the Newberry College record for most receiving yards in a single season (814) during a time when passing was in its infancy. A former student body president, he declined an offer from the Chicago Bears and had a distinguished career as a manufacturing chemist for Dupont & Pfizer. Rapphie died in 1985.
