One of the most prolific passers in Newberry history, Dustin Coats ended his career atop the record book in nearly every major passing category. He still ranks third in career yards (5,678), touchdowns (47), and attempts (821), and is fourth in completions (412). His 2,080 passing yards as a junior in 1999 were four yards shy of the school record at the time and are currently seventh in school history.
Known for his leadership on the field and excellent work in the classroom, the Airport High School product was named first team all-South Atlantic Conference quarterback after his sophomore season when he led the conference in passing yards, touchdowns, and passing efficiency, a category in which he also ranked seventh nationally.

Coats was a three-time Academic All-District selection and maintained a stellar GPA throughout his career as a Biology/Pre-Med major. He also won a SAC Player of the Week award and ended his career with three games of 250 or more passing yards.
