Ralph came to Newberry from Prosperity, SC in 1912 before the college had a football team. He earned letters in baseball and basketball in his freshman year. When the college began football in 1913, he lettered in all three sports for next three years. Ralph only missed one football game; he played every minute of every basketball game and every inning of baseball in his career. He was named All-State in football in 1914 and 1915, basketball in 1914, 1914, and 1915, and baseball in 1913, 1914, 1915, and 1916. He won state championships in 1916 and was elected to the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame in 1960.
