"Hoot" came to Newberry in April of 1945 after working with the Goodyear Tire Company in Columiba following his graduation from Blacksotck High School in Blackstock, South Carolina. He turned down a professional offer from both the Philadelphia Phillies and Brooklyn Dodgers to sign a scholarship with Newberry College.

He was instrumental in helping rebuild the Indians baseball program following the phasing out of the Navy V-12 unit following World War II. During his four seasons with the Newberry nine, the Indians posted a 51-39-1 record.

Individual baseball records during this period are scant but "Hoot" was known for five big wins in his career, including wins over South Carolina and a one-hitter over the University of Georgia. After pitching his last game for the Indians, coach Laval told "Hoot" that he had won more games, pitched in more games and struck out more batters that any pitcher he had coached in that period of time.

"Hoot" not only had a solid baseball career, but he was a mjor part of the Newberry College student-government activities. He served as the secretary/treasurer and Vice-President of the Kappa Phi fraternity and was the chairman of the Men's Council. He was involved in the student bosy and was the President of the Senior Class. He was also a member of the "Block N" Club four years and was named Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities.
