D.D. came to Newberry in the fall of 1975 on baseball scholarship, but later decided to use his talents on the football field. He became one of the most decorated players in the history of Newberry College football. He started his football career in stellar fashion with 10 interceptions in his freshman to lead the team in 1975. He’s tied for most interceptions in a single season Newberry College.

He was named SAC Defensive Player of the Week after his first game. He was Most Valuable Back and received the Billy Douglass Award as Most Outstanding Freshman of the year in 1975. In his career, he went on to be named First Team All SAC and All NAIA District 6 following the 1975, 76’, and 77’ seasons. He was named Lutheran College and Associated Press Honorable Mention All American during his career. He missed most of the 1978 season due to injury.

He played his final season in 1979. He finished with over 200 tackles, 20 interceptions, 400 yards in interception returns, and was a four year letterman. D.D. was second leader in interceptions at Newberry College. He received the Charles J. Shealey Memorial Scholarship in 1979 and graduated with a degree in Mathematics in 1980.
