Stan Stanton came to Newberry from Columbia in 1978. He was a three-year starter at defensive tackle for the Indians from 1979 through 1981. He earned first team All-SAC 8 honors in 1979 and 1981, and was an all-NAIA District 6 Player in 1980. Stanton's final season in 1981 saw him earns the most honors of his career. In 1981, Stanton was a Kodak poatseason All-American, NAIA All-American, All-NAIA District 6 and All- SAC 8 Player. Statistically, in 1980, Stanton totaled 64 tackles and five sacks with eight tackles for losses. Stanton has been regarded as one of Newberry's all time great defensive tackles.
