Charles is from the Richtext Community right outside of Columbia, S.C. and became one of the best two sport athletes at Newberry College.

He played baseball and basketball for four years. He went on to play professionally in both sports. In 1951-52, he was an All-State pitcher.

He was a member of the student council, president of Phi Tau Fraternity, a member of Who’s Who Among American Colleges and Universities, president of the Block ‘N’ Club. He played one year of professional baseball for the Pittsburg Coastal Plains and went on the 10 year career in the Eastern Carolina League.

He won the Hager award. He played eight years of professional basketball in the Eastern League. Charles went on to coach in high school and was once named the Head Coach of the South All-Star Team. He died in 1993.
