Daryl Owings, a native of Roebuck, S.C., was a standout on Setzler Field for the Newberry College football team from 1984-86.

As a wide receiver, Owings ended his collegiate career with several Newberry records with top honors until they were broken in later years. Owings set the record for career receiving yards (1879 yards), career receptions (116 catches) and career touchdown receptions (11 TDs).

Owings excelled in the classroom as well as on the field as he was named to the Academic all-South Atlantic Conference team in 1984, was a member of the Blue Key National Honor Fraternity and was given the George B. Cromer Award for Outstanding Citizenship all four years at Newberry. Owings’ best season came in 1986 as he was given several awards for his outstanding play earning all-SAC Second Team, NAIA District 6 First Team, NAIA All-American Honorable Mention and Newberry’s Most Outstanding Offensive Player.

A two-time team captain, Owings utilized his leadership on the field to pursue a career in education. Owings received a Masters and a Doctorate of Education from the University of South Carolina and has served as a principal of several schools in South Carolina and currently is a Spartanburg School District Six Superintendent.
