Charles came to Newberry College in 1975 and was a defensive tackle.

His junior year he was SAC 8 Player of the Week, Second Team All, Second Team All SAC 8, and All District. In his senior year he was First Team All SAC 8, SAC 8 Player of the Week Twice, SAC 8 Defensive Player of the Year, First Team All District, District Player of the Year, South Carolina Sports Player of the Week twice, South Carolina Sports Writers All State, and American Football Coaches All American team. He was Newberry College’s renegade chief for Best Defensive Player, Best Defensive Lineman award, and participated in the Blue Gray game. 

He was member of the preseason roster for 1979 Seattle Seahawks and the 1980 Detroit Lions. He later coached at Mississippi College where his team won 5 straight playoff births (1988-1992) and a National Championship in 1989. He was inducted into the 2002 SAC Hall of Fame and as a tribute to Charlie, Coach Callie of PC called him one of the best defensive linemen to ever play in the SAC 8.
