Hall of Fame
Fred was born in Pittsburg and was raised in Youngstown, Ohio. “Dutch” transferred to Newberry from Brown University in 1913. Fred was the quarterback for the first two games, and in his first college football game he scored 17 TDs against Bailey Military Academy and won the game 157-0. In two years he earned six letters; two each in football, basketball, and baseball. In 1914, Fred was All Southern All State in football and in 1915 he was All State in basketball. In 1955, the college named its 1924 gymnasium in Fred’s honor. Fred was inducted to the S.C. Athletic Hall of Fame.
