Carl came to Newberry in 1958 from Indianapolis, Indiana. He lettered for three years in basketball at Newberry. Carl was named to the NAIA All-America team and All-District in 1960 & 1961. He was All-Conference in 1959, 1960, and in 1961. Carl was also MVP SIAA Tourney in 1959, MVP Little Four Tourney in 1960 & 1961. In 1961, he was named Outstanding Athlete in State, All-State, and Player of Year in the Little Four Conference. Carl scored 1,949 points in his career and was later drafted by Cincinnati Royals in 1961. He played on the US All Service Team in 1963.
