Ashley Smith would join the Newberry College men’s soccer program in 1997 fresh out of Newberry High School. As an Indian, the Newberry native would become one of the best goalkeepers to put on a Newberry uniform. Smith would become the men’s soccer program’s all-time leader in career saves with 550 from 1996-2000. That mark would also make him second all-time in NCAA division-II men’s soccer. Smith is 24th all-time in NCAA division II for career saves per game with 7.05. In the 1998 season, Smith would become the NCAA division II statistical champion averaging 9.7 saves for the season for the Indian men’s soccer team Smith also had the most saves in all of Division II that season with 194. In 2000 Smith would notch his career-high in saves in a game with 19 against Carson-Newman. Smith would graduate from Newberry College in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in Sports Management. Smith was a member of the PE Majors club in his time at Newberry College. After graduating from Newberry, Smith would work at nearby Irmo, S.C., where he went from being the Athletic Coordinator of the Irmo, Chapin Recreation Commission, to being the Marketing Development Director. As a Marketing Development Director, Smith Plan, implement, organize, and direct athletic and leisure events, programs, camps and services. Build relationships with key market influencers, customers, potential partners, and community leaders. Accurately identify, prioritize, and track revenue and expense of tournaments, events and programs. Recruit, supervise and evaluate full time and part-time personnel, contractors and volunteers.
