Stan came to Newberry College in 1951 after graduating from Olar High School. After a very successful freshman year, he led the team in scoring the next season. His junior year was a dream for the coaches, players, and Newberry College. After a loss to Furman, the team won seven straight games, a school record that stood for over 50 years. With an NCAA rule change Stan was able to play fullback on offensive and line back on defense. He led the team in tackles both his junior and senior seasons.

The highlight of the Co-Captain senior year was the team’s invitation to the Elk’s Bowl, which was a first ever for the program. They played and beat Appalachian State in a close game. His coach gave him the game ball. He received Honorable Mention All State, Third Team All State, he lettered all four years, and served as president of the Block ‘n’ Club. While at Newberry College, he was also a member of the Blue Key National Honor Fraternity and the Kappa Phi Social Fraternity. He was president of his freshman and sophomore classes. He graduated from Newberry College in 1955.
