Josh Stepp was the quarterback for Newberry College’s most successful run in program history and re-defined the terms of success at the school’s most high-profile athletic position. After transferring from Furman prior to the 2004 season, he went on to be named second team all-South Atlantic Conference in 2005 and first team all-SAC in 2006. He was also a D2Football.com Honorable Mention All-American in 2006. He led the Indians from the bottom of the conference to the very pinnacle of success. The Pelion native took Newberry to their first-ever South Atlantic Conference Championship in 2006, starting that season with 10 consecutive wins. The Indians also qualified for the NCAA Division II playoffs for the first time that season, finishing in the second round with an 11-2 record. In just three seasons, Stepp set the Newberry College career records in every passing category, completing 883-of-975 passes for 7,398 yards and 72 touchdowns. A dual threat at quarterback, his 8,750 yards of total offense is also a school record, as is his 13 games passing for 250 yards or more. He has 14 single season records at Newberry and is ranked in the top 10 in many others. He went on to a career in coaching, becoming one of the state’s youngest head coaches while at Dreher HS. He is currently the head football coach and athletic director at Lexington HS.
