Tom Quinn served as head men’s basketball coach at Newberry College from 1958-62 and 1990-93 and was the first coach to lead a Newberry basketball team to the NAIA National Tournament, taking the Indians to Kansas City in 1960-61. The 1960-61 team compiled a record of 23-8 and won the Carolinas Conference championship, the NAIA District 26 championship and advanced to the national quarterfinals of the NAIA Tournament while achieving a rank of 13th in the nation.

Quinn was selected as the Collegiate Coach of the Year in South Carolina and the District 26 Coach of the Year in that season. The 1961-62 team also won the Carolinas Conference championship and advanced to the NAIA District 26 Playoffs with a 15-14 record. During Quinn’s coaching career he was selected Collegiate Coach of the Year in South Carolina, honorary Coach of the Year in North Carolina, NAIA District 26 Coach of the Year three times and Carolinas Conference Coach of the Year.

He went to national tournaments four times with three schools, taking Newberry, High Point and East Carolina to the postseason. Quinn coached basketball for 45 years and his high school, college and national teams compiled a winning percentage of 82 percent during his career.
