Keath Porterfield played running back for the Indians from 1993-96 and is one of the top rushers in school history. His 3,462 career rushing yards rank second in school history and he is one of only five career 3,000-yard rushers in the scarlet and gray.

In his 1995 junior season, Porterfield set school records with 1,307 yards on 244 carries. His 14 rushing touchdowns and seven 100-yard games that season rank second in school history.

He is the career leader in 100-yard games with 19, including a school record eight 100-yard games in his senior season of 1996. He had two games with three rushing touchdowns and had a career-best game of 206 yards in 1995 against Wofford. He had a 75-yard touchdown carry against Charleston Southern in 1994 that currently ranks as the 10th-longest in school history and was the fifth-longest carry at the time.

Porterfield earned all-South Region honors from CoSIDA while Newberry played his entire career as an independent, unable to earn all-conference honors. He was a preseason All-American in 1996 and played in the 1997 “Snow Bowl” all-star game in Fargo, N.D., where he had nine carries for 118 yards.
