A native of Lancaster S.C. Peggy entered in Newberry College in the fall of 1982. She attended Newberry on a dual basketball and volleyball scholarship. While at Newberry Peggy received numerous accolades for the performance both on the court and in the classroom. She lettered 4 years in both sports. Barnes most noticeably noted for her performance in basketball where she is now ranked in the top 5 in both career rebounds (1035) and scoring (1264).

During her first year of basketball she earned the Lady Indian award, Outstanding Freshman player, and was the 1983-84 Most Valuable Player. Barnes also participated in the Burger King all-star game during her sophomore year and in the District 6 NAIA all-star game in her senior year. In volleyball Barnes received the 1983-84 Most Improved award and the Most Valuable Player award in 1984-85. Barnes earned academic all district honors in 1985-86 for both sports and was selected to Who’s Who Among Student’s in Universities and Colleges.

She was also the recipient of the W. L. Laval award and the Algemon Sydney Sullivan award during her senior year at Newberry. She was a member of the Deans List and graduated with honors in Physical Education from Newberry in 1986. Peggy Lynn Barnes becomes the first female to be inducted to Newberry College Hall of Fame.
