Brandon Downey was a star cross country runner for the Indians from 2000-02. The Greenwood native still holds every program record for the program and is the only Newberry runner to ever earn NCAA all-region honors (2000). He earned first team all-South Atlantic Conference honors in 2000 and was second team all-conference in 2001. He set the school 10-kilmoter record at regionals in 2000 and the school 8-kilometer record in 2001 at Catawba. In 2002, he set the South Carolina Field House indoor track facility record in the 800-meter run, clocking in at just over two minutes. All told, he collected 16 individual wins at various meets throughout his Newberry career. He also earned third team Academic All-America honors from CoSIDA and Verizon in 2002, just the second athlete in Newberry history to earn that distinction. Downey is the first cross country runner to be inducted to the Newberry Athletics Hall of Fame.
