Phillip came to Newberry College in the fall of 1960. He lettered on the basketball team for four years and average 12.1 points as a freshman. He led the team in scoring for three seasons and finished with a career point total of 1,690(ninth all time). Following his freshman season he was named Honorable Mention All State and to the Little Four Second Team. He was named All State and First Team Little Four his remaining three seasons. Phil was also designated All Carolina Conference Team MVP and Little Four All Tournament MVP in 1962. He graduated with a degree in history in 1964 and coached at Clover and Strom Thurmond High schools. He went on to become the principal of Strom Thurmond. He is very active in his community and has served as mayor of Trenton and Chairman of Deacons at Ebenezer Baptist Church.
