Tommy Miller was a two sport athlete from 1966 to 1970 where he dominated the basketball hardwood and the baseball diamond.

Over four seasons, he was an eight time letterman and a co-captain in both sports. On the court, the Greenville, S.C., native stood out as an efficient scorer in the paint. He set a single season school record with a 57.6% field goal percentage his junior year, only to break it by shooting 58.2% his senior year. Over four seasons, Miller scored over 800 points on 54% shooting from the field.

On the baseball field, Miller posted one of the best seasons in Newberry history his junior year. He earned 40 base hits, a school record at the time, and a .388 batting average. He was so efficient that the 1970 Newberry baseball media guide read, “The Indians scoring power will rely on the hitting of Tommy Miller.”

He was awarded the W.L. Laval award in 1970, an honor given to a senior who is judged by faculty to be outstanding in athletic achievement, scholarship, character, and leadership. After receiving his degree, Tommy Miller worked in the insurance industry for 39 years.
