Box Score GREENWOOD - The Newberry Wolves saw three players record double-doubles in a key regional win, taking a 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-16, 25-18) victory over the Lander Bearcats at Finis Horne Arena on Tuesday night.
With the win, the Wolves move to 6-1 on the season, while Lander falls to 7-2 on the year. Newberry opens its home season this weekend with a pair of South Atlantic Conference matches, hosting Carson-Newman on Friday night and Lincoln Memorial on Saturday afternoon.
Logan Hayward (Sylvania, Ohio) had 14 kills and 12 digs for her first career double-double, while Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) had her third double-double of the season with 15 kills and 22 digs. Chelsea Mayor (Sugar Land, Texas) added a double-double from the setter position with 52 assists and 17 digs.
Elayni Stokes (Houston, Texas) had a match high 34 digs, while Jessica King (Los Angeles, Calif.) had 11 kills with four blocks while hitting .409 for the match.
"I felt like this was a real quality win for us. We played pretty well… one of the better matches we've played this year," said head coach Todd Hay following the victory. "We were able to serve them really tough and keep them out of system so they couldn't run their middles as effectively as they wanted to.
"I was really proud that we kept them to a .000 hitting percentage in the last two sets and after set two we only had one block and finished with 11. I thought the defensive effort on our part was steady and we know that Lander is an extremely good defensive team so I felt really good about this win. All three middles contributed a lot and I was really glad to see Jessica King hit over .400."
The Wolves did not get off to a hot start, as the Bearcats jumped out to a 6-2 lead thanks to four blocks in the early going. Newberry quickly fought back to tie the set at 11-all, but neither team could take a two-point advantage for a while. With Lander leading 18-17, Newberry scored five straight points to take a 22-18 lead. A kill from Hayward would finish off the set with a 25-20 Newberry set win. The Wolves hit .160 in the set compared to Lander's .077 rate and Hayward and Parrish each had five kills. Stokes had 11 of Newberry's 23 digs in the set to help the defensive effort.
Lander took an early lead again in the second set at 5-1, but Newberry rallied to tie it up by 9-all. Newberry went on a 4-0 run in the middle of the set to go up by 19-14, but the Bearcats' Julia Ferreira-Alves had three kills as the hosts rallied to tie it back up at 20-all. After the set was knotted at 22-all, Lander scored three of the final four points to tie up the match at the intermission. Lander hit .306 in the set with only one error, while Newberry had six errors and hit .279. Hayward had five kills, while Parrish had four. Hayward and Mayor notched aces.
After the break, Newberry came out strong at the net, putting up six blocks in the third set. Numerous Wolves surges kept the hosts from battling back, as Newberry led by as many as nine points at two spots in the set. Amanda Soper (Simi Valley, Calif.) had three kills to lead the Wolves in the set and King had a pair of kills and two blocks. Newberry hit .150 in the set and held Lander to a minus-.050 rate.
Stokes' defense and an errorless set from King helped the Wolves seal the victory in the fourth set. Newberry hit .192 and was led by five kills and no errors on seven attempts from King, while Stokes dug out 12 balls to keep points alive. Newberry also threw up four blocks in the set and held Lander to a .037 clip.
In the final two sets, Newberry had 26 kills and 10 errors while holding the Bearcats to a .000 rate with 18 kills and 18 errors, 10 of which came on Newberry blocks.
