NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves volleyball team notched a 25-18, 25-14, 25-21 sweep of Lander University in their home opener at Eleazer Arena to move to 5-0 on the season Tuesday evening.

Newberry will now take its undefeated record to the tough Eckerd College Classic for four matches in St. Petersburg, Fla., this weekend.

The Wolves' offense was in rhythm all night, as three players hit over .300 in the match, including a .440 percentage and 13 kill performance from South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.). Freshman middle blocker Alexus Horton (Austin, Texas) hit .417 with eight kills and Chelsea Mayor (Sugar Land, Texas) hit .333 with seven kills.

Lauren Prachar (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Amanda Soper (Simi Valley, Calif.) each had nine kills and Jessica King (Los Angeles, Calif.) had six.

The setters for the Wolves each recorded double-doubles as Blair Browning (New Lexington, Ohio) had 26 assists and 10 digs and Rachel Moran (Cypress, Texas) had 18 assists and 10 digs. Elayni Stokes led the team with 18 digs, while Prachar had 14 digs to fall just a kill short of a double-double herself.

The first set was a tight affair most of the way through the set. Lander took a 16-12 lead before the Wolves closed the set on a 13-2 run. Six of Newberry's final seven points in the set came on kills. Parrish had six kills in the set, while Mayor hit .800 with four kills on five attempts. Newberry hit .317 in the set to Lander's .108.

The Wolves spread the offense around in the second set, with three players notching three kills. Newberry hit .250 in the set to Lander's .053 as Newberry had its widest advantage of the night.

The deciding set was much closer as the scarlet and gray hit a night low of .235, but Horton, Parrish, Prachar and Soper had four kills apiece in the set. The Bearcats had the early advantage, jumping out to a 14-9 lead. Newberry clawed back to tie the set at 18-all and would score the final four points of the set, with a solo block from King putting an emphatic end to the match.
