Parrish leads Wolves to 3-1 win over Anderson

NEWBERRY - After dropping a tight first set, the Newberry Wolves responded by taking the next three sets for a 3-1 (24-26, 25-16, 25-22, 25-23) win over the visiting Anderson Trojans in Eleazer Arena on Tuesday night.

Newberry is now 10-9 overall with a 4-5 mark in the South Atlantic Conference after one trip through the double round robin format. Anderson is now 9-10 overall and 2-10 in the SAC. The Wolves kick off the second trip through the loop by hosting Lenoir-Rhyne at 7 p.m. Friday and Brevard at 1 p.m. Saturday as part of Newberry's annual Homecoming festivities.

Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) hit an impressive .420 in the match putting away a season-high 23 kills and earning a double-double with 14 digs. Lauren Prachar (Fort Wayne, Ind.) also had a double-double with 13 kills and 14 digs, while Blair Browning (New Lexington, Ohio) had 55 assists, 15 digs and a career-high six kills.

Elayni Stokes (Houston, Texas) had a team-high 21 digs, Amanda Soper (Simi Valley, Calif.) had 11 kills and Jessica King (Los Angeles, Calif.) rounded out Newberry's four players in double digits with 10 kills.

The first set was tight all the way through as there were 15 ties and four lead changes. No team was able to go up by more than four, which happened with Anderson's 16-12 advantage. Newberry fought back and tied the set by 19-all, with two straight Trojan attack errors forcing a timeout. Neither team pulled away, with a Parrish kill tying the set at 24-all, but two straight Wolves errors gave the guests the opening set. Parrish had five kills as Newberry hit .164 to AU's .160, but the Trojans had three blocks to Newberry's one.

Newberry came out on fire in the second set, jumping out to an 8-1 lead early. The Trojans were never able to get within striking distance from there, as the Wolves led by as many as 10 in the set and AU could not get within seven points. Newberry's 25-16 set win tied the match at one set apiece. Newberry hit .333 in the set with five kills from Parrish, four from Soper and three from King, while the Trojans only hit .108.

The Wolves took off to a quick lead in the third set as well, going up 7-2, but Anderson responded in turn, tying the set by 13-all. The battle continued all the way to 22-all before Newberry scored the final three points of the set, with a block from Parrish and King closing out the set at 25-22 to give Newberry a two sets to one lead. There were 11 ties and five lead changes in the set, with Parrish notching six kills and King had four. Newberry had three blocks in the set and hit .318 compared to Anderson's .167.

Newberry executed a fantastic comeback in the fourth set to win the match. The Trojans raced out to a 10-4 lead and the Wolves had used both of their timeouts by the time AU led 13-6. From there, Newberry scored 13 of the next 17 points, taking the lead at 18-17 on a Prachar kill. The night-long battle continued from there, with four ties and three lead changes before Newberry scored three of the final four points and a Parrish kill claimed the match win. Prachar had six kills in the set and Parrish had seven without an error, as Newberry hit .211 to AU's .167.
