Wolves fall to Carson-Newman 3-0

Box Score

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Looking to build on their past three road successes, the Wolves (13-11, 5-8 SAC) returned home on Friday night looking to move up the ranks of the South Atlantic Conference. They took a minor step in the wrong direction though, falling 25-13, 25-22, 25-10 to the Carson-Newman Eagles (13-6, 7-6 SAC).

The Wolves struggled through the three set match, never finding their usual offensive groove. The scarlet and gray only hit -.018 and were out-blocked 13-to-1 by the Eagles.

“Carson-Newman came out of the gates with a huge run, and we never seemed to respond,” said head coach David Nicholson. “We battled in the second set, but other than that we didn't play much of a match.”

The aforementioned Eagle run was 7-0 to begin the match and the scarlet and gray were never able to recover. The Wolves never led in the set and ended up with nine errors compared to their seven total kills.

The best chance for Newberry to regain the momentum came in the second set. The squads traded points and neither side was able to attain more than a two point lead through the first 20 points. With the score sitting at 10-10 Newberry went on a 5-2 run to give them their biggest lead of the match. Kills from Sarah Scott (Redding, Calif.) and Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) coupled with three errors by the Eagles gave the Wolves a slim 15-12 edge.

Their lead would not last for long as the visitors charged back to knot things at 15. The teams played back-and-forth volleyball until the final points. The scoreboard read 22-22 when a pair of Eagle kills and a Parrish attack error would put the Wolves in a 2-0 hole.

The third set was not too pleasing to the eyes of the Newberry faithful as the Wolves quickly fell into a 9-4 hole. Newberry only tallied six more points throughout the remainder of the set and the Eagles cruised to a 25-10 win and a match victory. Once again Newberry was plagued with errors in the third set and the Eagles put on a defensive showcase with their blocking ability, gathering four of their 13 total.

One bright spot for the Wolves occurred in the waning moments of the third set as Nadia Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) picked up her 1,000th career dig. The senior is only the sixth player in Newberry history to achieve that milestone and the first to do so since Jessica Lipsi in the 2006 season. Andrade finished the match with 12 digs and a pair of service aces.

Parrish racked up six kills, an assist, a service ace and nine digs to lead the Wolves offense.

Newberry will try to bounce back tomorrow (Oct. 23) as they play host to Lincoln Memorial. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
