Newberry volleyball defeat Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College volleyball team extended their winning streak to five matches Saturday afternoon by defeating the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters, 3-1 (25-23, 25-10, 20-25, 25-20)

Lorena Maia (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) played spectacular, setting a career high 17 kills with a .467 attack percentage. Priscila Sales (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) followed her record setting match against Carson-Newman by posting an astonishing 24 kills with 11 digs and an attack percentage of .526.

Nadia Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) was spectacular on defense with a match high 21 digs. Brianna Blakely (Houston, Texas) led her team in assists with a match high 45 assists.

Lauren Kiwacka (Tipp City, Ohio) put up great numbers for the Railsplitters with seven kills, 23 assists, and an attack percentage of .438. She was solid on defense as well with seven digs and five block assists. Amanda Horenkamp (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) led the Railsplitters in kills (8) and digs (12).

The first set was tight as both teams could not find an advantage over the other. With the score tied at 21 all, Newberry took advantage of two costly Lincoln Memorial errors while Sales scored two kills that sealed the set, 25-23. Sales had her best set of the night in the first set with eight kills on 11 attacks.

The scarlet and gray were at their most dominant in the second set and put the Railsplitters away quickly. With the set tied at four all, Newberry went on a 10-1 run aided by two exciting service aces by Kember Lichtie (Amarillo, Texas). Newberry would have two more runs of five points or more and win the set, 25-10. The star of the second set was the all around offense of the scarlet and gray that hit a .417 total attack percentage and held the Railsplitters to only seven digs.

The Railsplitters were down but not out of the match. With Newberry down 13-14, they gave up a quick 6-1 run that made it difficult for the scarlet and gray to earn the set sweep. They fought hard and brought the deficit down to three points but Lincoln Memorial would hold on to win, 25-20.

NC needed just one set to take the match but had given up the momentum to Lincoln Memorial. They found themselves down 7-15 but fought hard and tied it up at 18 all. The offense was moving on all cylinders and a Maia ace sealed the set for Newberry, 25-20. Maia was as dominant as ever in the final set with seven kills and an attack percentage of .600.

The Newberry College volleyball team now stands at 11-5 overall and 4-1 in the SAC. They will look to extend their winning streak to five matches this Tuesday when they go on the road to take on Wingate at 7 p.m. They will return home Friday, October 10 to take on Lenoir-Rhyne at 7 p.m.
