Box Score

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. Cara Coleman notched 17 kills and hit a dominating .556 while serving up a career high five aces and taking part in seven of the eight team blocks as Newberry Volleyball defeated the Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial Friday afternoon, 3-1. Jamie Foster-Mann tied a career high with 17 kills in the match, hitting an impressive .306 adding to the Indian offensive as Newberry recorded 16 more kills in the match that gave Newberry its first defeat over LMU in school history. Game scores were 17-30, 30-25, 30-24 and 30-27.

Colemans performance was by far the most impressive of any Indian this year, utilizing a solid combination of offense and defense to lead Newberry (4-1) to the win in the Carson-Newman Tournament match.

Cara Coleman had an exceptional performance today, said Newberry head coach Dr. Gylton Da Matta. Not only did perform well in the stats, she hit well from the back row, she had great defensive coverage, she made some crucial sets when needed and she was consistent across all skills in all of the games. She stepped up and had a huge performance for us today.

Lincoln Memorial (4-1) dropped their first match of the season and their first loss to Newberry in school history as the Indians knotted the all-time series at one apiece.

One of the most noticeable things that isnt related in the stats today was the exceptional ball control that we had, said Dr. Da Matta. We were able to pass the ball much more efficiently today than ever before, and that is the main reason as why we performed so well today. Some of our girls hit the ball so well because the other girls passed them so well.

The Indians got off to a slow start in game one, hitting .000 as a team (11 K, 11 E, 47 TA) to the Splitters .135 (9 K, 4 E, 37 TA) as LMU served up three aces in the game. Foster-Mann and Coleman each had four kills on the game as Newberry fell 30-17.

Game two was a different story as the Indians were almost untouchable with the ball, hitting .386 (22 K, 5 E, 44 TA) while LMU only hit .224 (16-5-49). Foster-Mann and Coleman once again added four kills apiece but Kristin Pulone shone through in the game with six kills. Coleman added two block assists to the defensive effort as Newberry edged Lincoln Memorial, 30-25.

Coleman and Foster-Mann mimicked each other again in game three, with both players hitting .444 as Foster-Mann slammed down six kills with Coleman adding five. Coleman served up two aces in the game and had one block assist. Jessica Lipsi joined in with four kills and one ace as Newberry shut down the Railsplitter offensive effort, who could only hit .075 in the game, to the Indians .233.

Another solid offensive effort sealed the deal in game four as the Indians clinched the match with a 30-27 victory. Coleman was once again on fire with four kills and two aces in the game. Foster-Mann and teammate Katie Stone each had three kills.

Newberry next faces Northern Kentucky Friday evening at Holt Fieldhouse on the campus of Carson-Newman College.
