HILTON HEAD, SC - The Newberry Wolves men's tennis team fell 5-2 to No. 13 Fairmont State on Tuesday morning in a non-conference matchup.
Fairmont State claimed the early advantage by sweeping all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
In doubles action, the pair of Daniel Watson and Lucas Mruk competed at the No. 1 position but fell 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, Senthen Reddy and Sohei Kamiyama were defeated 6-3, while Martin Posada Garcia and Noel Bartz dropped their match at No. 3 doubles by the same 6-3 score.
The Wolves responded in singles play with a pair of strong performances at the top of the lineup. Watson earned a decisive 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles to put Newberry on the board. Reddy followed with a straight-set win of his own at No. 2 singles, defeating his opponent 6-4, 6-4.
Fairmont State, however, secured the match by winning the remaining four singles contests. Posada Garcia fell 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, while Kamiyama was defeated 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4. Bartz dropped his match at No. 5 singles 6-3, 6-1, and Mruk battled at No. 6 singles before falling 7-5, 7-5.
The Wolves will return to the courts on March 18th to face off against Wingate University.Â
