MARS HILL, N.C. – The Newberry College baseball team (17-17, 11-7 SAC) split their Saturday double header against the Lions of Mars Hill (12-23, 4-15 SAC), winning game one 7-3 and falling in game two by a 6-4 final score.
Junior outfielder
Kade Faircloth would go 4-8 at the dish with a rbi in game two this afternoon for the Wolves.
Game One
The Wolves would score the first seven runs and not look back, winning game one 7-3.
Sophomore infielder
Chandler Mims would go 3-3 in the win driving in one run. The Wolves would get runs driven in from the bottom and the top of the order as
Donovan Ford and
Luke Compton would drive in two runs on the afternoon.
Hunter French would get the win as he would throw six innings and struck out five batters.
Brayden Gilson would finish the game as he would throw three innings and struck out three batters.
The Wolves would start their scoring in the top of the third with a rbi single from
Donovan Ford scoring Mims to make it 1-0. On the next at-bat,
Luke Compton would drive in
Jomar Lugo with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
In the top of the fourth,
Luke White would lay down a bunt that would score
Bryson Nuckols and
Kade Faircloth to extend the Wolves lead to 4-0.
The Wolves would add two more in the top of the seventh as Ford would have his second rbi of the day with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-0. On the next at-bat, Compton would add another run as he would reach on an error that would score Lugo and make it 6-0.
In the next inning, Mims would continue his perfect day at the plate with a two-out rbi single to make it 7-0.
The Lions would score three runs in the bottom of the ninth but the Wolves would hang on for a 7-3 win.
Game Two
The Wolves' comeback to keep their winning streak alive fell short as the Lions would take game two by a 6-4 final score.
The Lions would take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a rbi double.
The Wolves would respond with one run in the top of the second with a fielder's choice from
Jomar Lugo that would score
Henry Gibson to tie the game up at one.
The Lions would score four unanswered runs with two in the bottom of the second and fourth to take a 5-1 lead.
The Wolves would battle back scoring a run from Gibson's RBI fielder's choice in the top of the fifth to cut the Lions' lead to 5-2.
With an rbi fielder's choice from Faircloth and a double from Gibson, the Wolves would get the game tying run on base in the top of the seventh but would fall short by a 6-4 final score.
