CAYCE, S.C. – The Newberry men’s tennis team recorded its sixth-straight victory after sweeping Catawba 9-0 Tuesday at the Cayce Tennis Center. With the win, the Wolves move to 2-0 in the South Atlantic Conference.
Newberry (10-2, 2-0 SAC) swept doubles play over the Catawba Indians (7-5, 3-2 SAC). Jordan Monosky and Edison Ambarzumjan recorded an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Nikhil Mannepalli and Angel Pizarro scored a tight 9-8, 8-6 win at No. 2, while Richard Zeh and Logan Adkins closed out doubles play with the 8-3 win at No. 3.
The Wolves swept through singles play in straight sets. Ambarzumjan was a 6-4, 6-4 winner at No. 1 while Monosky won his match at No. 2 by a 6-2, 6-2 final. Monosky recorded his tenth win of the season for a 10-2 overall record.
Mannepalli, the reigning SAC AstroTurf Player of the Week, scored a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3. Mannepalli is now 11-1 on the season in singles play.
Pizarro (6-1, 6-3), Adkins (7-5, 6-2) and Zeh (6-4, 6-2) clinched the sweep for Newberry with their victories in singles action.
Newberry will face Mars Hill (1-11, 0-5 SAC) on Thursday at the Cayce Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
