Wolves handed first losses of the year at Lander

GREENWOOD - The Newberry Wolves' tennis teams were handed their first losses of the 2015-16 season Thursday at Lander, with the women dropping a 6-3 decision and the men falling 9-0 to the No. 5 team in the nation.

Newberry starts South Atlantic Conference play Saturday at Mars Hill.

WOMEN: Lander 6, Newberry 3
The Bearcats started the match with all three doubles points to put Newberry in a tough spot, but the Wolves took the top three singles flights.

Elizabrth Williamson - who is ranked 17th in the Southeast Region - remained undefeated at No. 1 singles on the season with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win over Yuriko Ono, who is ranked 16th regionally.

Vanessa Ortiz took a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ivanka Mocic at No. 2 singles and Amanda Carrillo won a 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 battle over Anni Poikola at No. 3 singles.

MEN: No. 5 Lander 9, Newberry 0
The Wolves faced an uphill battle against one of the toughest teams they will see this season. Angel Pizarro took his opponent to 7-5 in the second set at No. 5 singles, but that was as close as any Newberry player would get to a set win.
