LEXINGTON - The Newberry Wolves men's and women's tennis squads eked out key conference wins Wednesday, each defeating the Coker Cobras by a 5-4 count at the Lexington County Tennis Center.
WOMEN: Newberry 5, Coker 4
An even split of the singles matches made the earlier results from doubles all-important, and it was the Wolves who picked up the edge thanks to a tight win at No. 2 doubles.
At No. 2 doubles, Elizabeth Williamson and Tara Lamers edged Sarah Elliott and Jessi Campos 9-7 in what would be the deciding point in the dual. Vanessa Ortiz and Amanda Carrillo won 8-3 at No. 1 singles.
Williamson also picked up a big win at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-2 victory. Amanda Carrillo won 7-5, 7-5 at No. 3 singles in another tight win and a three-set win by Kelly McManus at No. 6 singles was also an important point.
MEN: Newberry 5, Coker 4
Coker won two of three doubles points, forcing Newberry to win four singles matches to pick up the win. Angel Pizarro earned a three-set win at No. 5 (6-4, 3-6, 6-3) to give Newberry its 10th win of the season.
Logan Atkins and Richard Zeh won at No. 3 doubles for the Wolves' only point in the early portion of the dual. No. 1 doubles was one of the most entertaining of the match as Coker's Hellbe and Berbom won a tiebreaker 7-5 to take a 9-8 win over Fernando Espana and Fernando Tous.
"Los Fernandos" each earned singles wins, with Espana winning 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 and Tous winning 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2. Jacob Svantesson's 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 4 singles set up the chance for Pizarro to win the match for the Wolves.
