NEWBERRY - The Newberry men's tennis team earned its first South Atlantic Conference match of the season in style as the Wolves cruised to a 7-2 victory over the visiting Carson-Newman Eagles at Newberry High School on Saturday afternoon.
The Wolves (3-3, 1-1 SAC) picked up their first point of the day at No. 3 doubles where seniors David Sons (Lexington, S.C.) and Jeffery Kiser (Newberry, S.C.) knocked off Carson-Newman's (2-6, 0-1 SAC) No. 3 pair.
At No. 1 doubles the Wolves' senior pair of Michael Saunders (Christchurch, New Zealand) and Vinicius Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) came from behind to top Juan Sebastian Perez and Joao Pedro Oliveria 8-5.
After falling at No. 2 doubles, the Wolves headed to singles play with a 2-1 advantage and quickly added to the advantage with straight sets victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Saunders topped Perez at No. 1, while Botelho won at No. 2 to give Newberry a 4-1 lead.
Newberry clinched the victory at No. 3 singles as sophomore Fernando Espana (Madrid, Spain) topped Stefano Daza in straight sets.
Junior Mohammed Chakir (Rabat, Morocco) earned a win at No. 4 singles, while Sons picked up the Wolves' fifth singles victory in straight sets.
Newberry travels to Wingate on Monday for a 2 p.m. match with the Bulldogs.
