Loveridge notches Senior Day singles win in Wolves' 6-3 victory over Catawba

NEWBERRY - In front of his parents and on senior day, Newberry senior Cal Loveridge cruised through singles play as he and the Wolves earned a 6-3 win over the visiting Catawba Indians at the Cannon Tennis Courts.

The Wolves (11-7, 4-3 SAC) led the match right off the start as juniors Michael Saunders (Christchurch, New Zealand) and Vinicius Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) topped Alex Macdonald and Matthew Nicholson 8-2 at No. 1 doubles.

Newberry's No. 3 pair of freshman Fernando Espana (Madrid, Spain) and junior David Sons (Lexington, S.C.) notched an 8-3 victory over Aaron Vanhorenbeck and Jess Goodall.

Catawba (11-10, 2-5) saw Newberry's lead extend as Botelho topped Goodall in straight sets at No. 2. The Indians bounced back to tie the match at 3-3 as Catawba earned singles wins at No. 1 and No. 3.

The bottom half of the Newberry lineup had little trouble as it dispatched the Indians as Espana battled to a three-set victory at No. 4 singles, while Loveridge (Derby, Derbyshire, England) and Sons cruised to straight set victories at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.

The Wolves play Mars Hill at home on Saturday as Newberry plays its final conference home match of the season at 2 p.m.
