NEWBERRY, S.C. - For the second consecutive match, the Wolves held a 2-1 lead after the doubles competition of a match but could not finish the job in the singles bouts as they fell 5-4 to the Pfeiffer Falcons.
The Wolves fell to 0-5 on the season while the Falcons kept their record untarnished and moved to 3-0.
Newberry was forced to play catch-up early when Vinicius Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) and David Sons (Lexington, S.C.) fell in the opening doubles bout 8-3 to Philip Lawson and Johan de Wit. Fortunately, the potent combination of Michael Saunders (Christchurch, New Zealand) and Mohammed Chakir (Rabat, Morocco) pulled the Wolves even with an 8-3 win over Sid Kaushik and Luis Villaia. Saunders and Chakir improved their doubles record to 3-1 on the season and notched their third straight win as a tandem.
Jeffery Kiser (Newberry, S.C.) and James Bethea (Newberry, S.C.) gave the pack its first lead of the afternoon after they scored an 8-6 win over Ben Hunter and Stephen Tyndal in the final doubles match.
Pfeiffer would knot matters again in the first singles match when Lawson defeated Saunders 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Botelho bounced back from his first singles defeat of the season against Coker and bested de Wit 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles spot to give the Wolves a lead once more. The Newberry advantage was extended to two when Chakir defeated Kaushik 6-4, 6-3 in the third singles bout.
That was the last victory the scarlet and gray would achieve on the afternoon. Sons fell in a 6-1, 6-1 match against Hunter and Villata defeated Kiser 6-1, 6-1 to help the Falcons pull even once again.
Michael Woolard (Lexington, S.C.) found himself on the wrong end of a 6-0, 6-0 tally against Tyndel in the final singles match which would spell doom for Newberry.
The pack will take to the courts again tomorrow (Feb. 20) as they entertain Belmont Abbey. The matches are set to begin at 3 p.m.
