Newberry men fall to Brevard Tornados, 5-4

BREVARD, N.C. - The Newberry College men's tennis team lost in a close battle against the Brevard Tornados on the road Monday afternoon, 5-4.

The first flight doubles pair of Felipe Sobrinho (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Jeremy Smith (Durban, South Africa) extended their winning streak to five matches by defeating Konstantin Savelyev and Cole Altizer, 9-8 (7-1).

Unfortunately, Newberry fell into a 1-2 hole by dropping the final two doubles matches. Maxim Sukharev (Vilnius, Lithuania) and Lucas Mattos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) lost to Jarred Fisher and Heikki Riikonen (8-6) while Pavle Popovic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Mark Boswell (Piedmont, S.C.) fell to Andrew Thompson and Nate Apps (8-3).

In singles play, Newberry and Brevard split three matches a piece. Smith went undefeated on the day by defeating Altizer (6-3, 0-6, 6-3). The other two wins came from Sukharev who defeated Savelyev (5-2, ret.) and Mattos who defeated Rikkonen (36, 6-1, 10-6).

In other singles action, Sobrinho fell to Fisher (6-1, 6-2); Popovic lost to Thompson (6-2, 6-2); and Boswell was defeated by Apps (6-2, 6-0).

The Newberry College men's tennis team now moves to 2-6 overall and 1-2 in the South Atlantic Conference. The squad now moves on to face Georgia College and State on the road this Tuesday at 2:30 pm. Brevard (12-3, 3-3 in the SAC) will return to action on April 3 to face Lenoir Rhyne in a home match at 3 pm.
