NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College men's tennis team won its first road match of the season Friday afternoon by defeating the North Greenville Crusaders, 5-4.
The match was a part of the first annual Greer College Cup, an event sponsored by the Greer Community Tennis Association. After the match, the organization sponsored a dinner party for both teams and awarded a plaque to Newberry in honor of the victory.
Jeremy Smith (Durban, South Africa) and Felipe Sobrinho (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) both came up big for the scarlet and gray on Friday. In the first doubles flight, they teamed up to defeat Juan Carlos Aguilera and Jacob Rogers (8-5). In singles play, Smith defeated Gabriel Altmayer (7-5, 7-5) and Sobrinho defeated Aguilera (6-4, 6-2).
In the two other doubles matches, Maxim Sukharev (Vilnius, Lithuania) and Lucas Mattos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) were defeated by Timur Kamilou and Altmayer (8-2) while Pavle Popovic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Mark Boswell (Piedmont, S.C.) fell to William Ho and Guilherme Vasquez (8-2).
In singles action, Sukharev won against Kamilou (2-6, 6-3, 6-2); Mattos beat Rogers (6-0, 6-2); Popovic lost to Ho (6-4, 2-6, 11-9); and Boswell fell to Vasquez (6-4, 6-2).
With the win, Newberry improves to 2-4 overall this season. The scarlet and gray will return to action on Saturday in a home conference match against Wingate at 1 pm. North Greenville (3-6) will face off against USC Lancaster on Friday, March 27 at 3 pm.
