Newberry volleyball sweeps the Belmont Abbey Crusaders

BELMONT, N.C. - The Newberry College volleyball team extended its winning streak to four matches, beating the Belmont Abbey Crusaders on the road, 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-14).

Kember Lichtie (Amarillo, Texas) played a great all around match with 12 kills and 11 digs, earning Newberry's first double-double of the season. Priscila Sales (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) led the attack for Newberry as she earned a match high 13 kills with a .476 attack percentage. The top player for the Crusaders was Bria James (Statesville, N.C.) with six kills and 10 digs.

The scarlet and gray started the match with an intensity the Crusaders were not ready to face. After being tied at 3-all, NC went on an outstanding 18-3 run that blew Belmont Abbey away. The run eventually led to Newberry wining the set 25-11. Defense was the key to the first set victory as the scarlet and gray only gave up one kill the entire set.

The second set was closer than the first, but once again NC would find a way to get ahead on the scoreboard. Belmont Abbey did a better job of keeping up with Newberry and at one point only trailed 10-11. The scarlet and gray then stepped on the gas pedal and outscored the Crusaders, 14-9, to close out the set. Newberry went on to win the set 25-19.

Lorena Maia (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) continued to show that she was a first-class server with three aces in the second set. She would finish the match with five aces, four more then the Crusaders had all night.

The third set was business as usual for the scarlet and gray. The Crusaders tried their best to stay in the set but were eventually broken down by Newberry's powerful offense. NC would outscore the competition by 11 points and win the final set, 25-14. Brianna Blakely (Houston, Texas) finished the match with a great set. She had 11 assists along with two aces in the final set. She finished the match with a match high 35 assists and three aces.

With the fourth straight victory, the Newberry College volleyball team improved its record to 4-1 overall. Their next match will be at home on Tuesday against Lander at 7 p.m.
