Newberry sweeps Mars Hill

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College swept Mars Hill in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action 3-0 (30-22, 31-14, 31-29).  Newberry improves to 9-1 (2-1 SAC) while the Lions fall to 11-6 (0-3 SAC).

The Lady Indians controlled game one from the beginning jumping out to a 7-2 lead.  Mars Hill tried to battle back and got within three points at 8-5, but Newberry would pull away.  The Lady Indians scored 8 of the next 11 points to gain a 16-8 lead.  That would be all Newberry needed to take the first stanza by a score of 30-22.

Game two appeared as if it was going to be closer than the first with the two squads swapping points.  Trailing 7-6, Newberry scored to tie the game for the fifth and final time.  That point was the start of an impressive 18-2 run to take a 22-9 lead.  The run included Cara Coleman (Allentown, Pa.) serving 12 consecutive points.  Newberry took game two 30-14.

With her efforts, Coleman gets her name in the NCAA record book.  It is the fifth longest streak in NCAA Division II history.  Seventeen other players have accomplished streaks or equal or greater length with Erin Gudmundson setting the record with16 consecutive points served on September 6, 2003. 

In game three, the Lions came out refocused and jumped to an early 4-0 lead.  However, Newberry rallied back to eventually tie the game at 8-8 and then take a 10-8 lead.  Mars Hill regained the lead taking a narrow advantage at 13-12.  Newberry then opened a 6-2 run to regain and extend the lead to 18-14.  Not to be outdone, the Lions responded with a 6-2 run of their own to tie the game at 20-20.  Mars Hill gained a two point edge before Newberry drew level at 23-23.  The game would see five more ties before Mars Hill was serving for game point at 29-28.  Newberry held strong and tied the game one final time.  With the game deadlocked, Newberry scored the next two points to claim the game (31-29) and match.

Laurie Barman (Madison, Wisc.) led Newberry�s offensive efforts with 12 kills and swung .524 on the night.  Priscila Sales (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), who set a school record in kills on Wednesday, recorded 11 kills and Lorena Maia (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) added 10 on the evening.  Kilee Ruppe (Spartanburg, S.C.) dished out 37 assists in match.     

Sales led the way defensively with 14 digs to earn a double-double on the night.  Nadia Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) also recorded 10 digs.

Danielle Silvers led the Lions with 13 kills on the night.  Silvers also had 14 digs.  Tiffany Oreka led the team with 18 digs while Jessica Britt had 10 more.

Newberry will return to action tomorrow for a 1 p.m. start time.  The Lady Indians will continue with conference play as they host Carson-Newman College.
