Box Score EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Inga Woiwode scored from ten yards out in the 85th minute to help Newberry College secure a 1-1 tie in double overtime against the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville Cougars in women's soccer action today. The goal was Woiwode's second of the season.
The Lady Indians fell behind early when SIU-E's Kate Yearian took a pass from Elizabeth Valenti and beat Newberry goalie Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) in just the fourth minute of the game.
The score remained 1-0 until the 85th minute when Lindsey Landgrebe (Springfield, Ill.) fed Woiwode (El Paso, Texas) who scored on a shot from ten yards out sending the game to overtime.
Newberry threatened several times during the game firing off 18 shots, including five in the overtime periods. However, Cougars goalie Kaci Backs played superbly with 10 saves.
After the early goal, Beckerle shut down SIU-E's offense recording seven saves, including four in the overtime periods to help and preserve a tie for the Lady Indians. Beckerle has played all 220 minutes in Newberry's two games this season and has a goals against average of 0.82 on the year.
As a team Newberry out shot SIU-E, 18-10, in the draw. The Lady Indians also earned seven corner kicks to the Cougars five.
The double overtime game was the second in two games for Newberry College. The Lady Indians finish their tour through the Midwest with a record of 0-0-2.
Newberry returns home for its next game against Clayton State on September 1.
