SALISBURY, NC – The Newberry College women's soccer team turned in one of its most impressive defensive efforts of the season, battling to a 0–0 draw on the road against No. 3 Catawba on Saturday afternoon at Frock Field. With the result, the Wolves move to 5-5-4 overall and 1-5-3 in South Atlantic Conference play.
Goalkeeper Madison Gutierrez was the difference-maker for the Wolves, recording a season-high 11 saves to post her sixth shutout of the year. Facing 33 shots and 14 on target, Gutierrez grounded a resilient Newberry back line that took pressure from one of the nation's top offenses.
Defenders Emily Castaneda, Avalina Espinoza, and Sydney Gusewelle played all 90 minutes, keeping Catawba's attacking threats off the board while limiting second-chance looks. Molly Quartly and Haylee Patino led the Wolves in the attack, each registering a shot on goal as Newberry generated some chances in the second half.
The Wolves will return home on Wednesday for their final regular season match vs. Anderson at 4:30pm.
