NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College men's tennis team defeated Wingate University, 7-2, in South Atlantic Conference action here Wednesday.
The Indians pick up their first SAC win of the spring and move to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in the league. Wingate drops to 3-11 overall and 0-4 in the SAC.
Jeremy Smith (Durban, South Africa) won both of his matches for the Indians, as he defeated Jose Valarezo, 6-3, 6-2 in No. 3 singles and teamed up with Daryl Van Vuuren (Durban, South Africa) for an 8-6 win over Hendrik Ternieden and Brendan Molan in No. 1 doubles.
Smith, Scott Gates (Atlanta, Ga.), Lucas Mattos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Felipe Sobrinho (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) have each recorded two consecutive singles wins.
In No.1 singles, Maxim Sukharev (Vilnius, Lithuania) came back from being down a set and 0-5 in the second set to defeat Brandon Thornton, 2-6, 7-5, 4-1, with Thornton retiring in the third set.
The Indians hit the road for two SAC matches this weekend, with the first coming at 2 p.m. Friday against Carson-Newman. Newberry plays at 11 a.m. Saturday at Tusculum.
