Newberry fends off scrappy Claflin team

NEWBERRY - The Lady Indians of Newberry College improved to 6-0 after dodging a bullet in the form of the Claflin University Pantherettes.

In the second meeting of the season, Claflin (3-3) battled back from a 12-point deficit to pull within two after Pantherette senior Taffika Haynes rattled home a rainbow three-pointer from deep in the right-hand corner to make the score 57-55 with 6:52 left on the clock.

However, on the ensuing possession for Newberry, Claflin point guard Ashley Sorrell fouled Newberry's Ashlee Wright on the baseline underneath the basket. Wright made both of the following free throws to give the Lady Indians a four point cushion.

Claflin would again claw to within a deuce after Pantherette center Jayshaun Bailey cashed in on an easy two points after an offensive rebound at the 3:32 mark. Up 61-59, Newberry wasted no time on the following possession with sopohomore Carnicha Bellinger scoring after Tonique Frasier missed a lay-up in transition.

Claflin wouldn't score again and Newberry claimed a hard fought 66-59 victory.

The Lady Indians had four players in double-digits for the third consecutive game led by Tonique Frasier. The junior from Walterboro, S.C. registered yet another double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds playing the final 6:01 with four fouls.

Bellinger finished one rebound shy from a double-double as well, with 16 points and 9 boards. Junior guard Ashlee Wright and Monica Alexander were integral to the offense with 13 and 12 points respectively.

As a team, Newberry out-rebounded Claflin by a 41-23 and 20-10 in the second half.

For the Pantherettes of Claflin, Jayshuan Bailey and Taffika Haynes provided plenty of stellar basketball. Bailey cranked out 19 points before fouling out at the 1:49 mark in the second. Haynes finished with 15 points on 7-10 shooting from the field.

The Lady Indians next play on Thursday at Eleazer Arena for a 6:00 p.m. match with Augusta State University.
