Strong Second Half Lifts Newberry to 62–49 Win

NEWBERRY, S.C. — The Newberry College women's basketball team picked up their second consecutive South Atlantic Conference victory 62-49 over Anderson University on Tuesday night inside Eleazer Arena, improving to 8–3 overall and 2–3 in SAC play. The Trojans dropped to 4–5 overall and 1–3 in conference action.

Marykate Kent led all scorers with 19 points, including five three-pointers, while Rickell Brown added 13 points and five assistsJada Brown recorded a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds, and Leigha Harris chipped in 11 points to round out a balanced performance for the Wolves.

The Wolves established their presence early, using perimeter shooting and defensive energy to grab a narrow 16–15 lead after the first quarter. Newberry knocked down four three-pointers in the opening frame, with Kent connecting from deep twice to help the Wolves counter Anderson's early pushes. Newberry maintained control in a tightly contested second quarter, leaning on defensive stops and timely rebounds to take a 28–26 advantage into halftime. The Wolves forced multiple turnovers late in the half and limited Anderson's second-chance opportunities to keep momentum heading into the break.

The game shifted decisively in the third quarter as Newberry turned up the defensive pressure. The Wolves outscored Anderson 20–10 in the period, creating separation with a combination of steals, fast-break points, and strong execution in the half court. Kent continued her hot shooting from beyond the arc, while Brown dominated the glass and finished around the rim to extend the lead.

Newberry stayed composed in the fourth quarter, holding Anderson to 13 points while continuing to force difficult shots. The Wolves finished the night with 15 steals and 31 points off turnovers, using defensive disruption to control the tempo and close out the conference win. 

With the victory, Newberry carries momentum into its next contest, traveling to North Carolina A&T on December 30for a nonconference road matchup. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. as the Wolves look to close out the calendar year on a strong note.
