NEWBERRY - Junior forward Tonique Frasier secured her third straight double double just 33 seconds into the second half to power the Newberry College Lady Indians (3-0) to a 76-54 victory over the visiting Edward Waters College Lady Tigers.
Frasier posted 26 points on 11-16 shooting from the floor while grabbing 15 rebounds. The Walterboro, S.C. native's 13 first half points sparked a Lady Indian offense that broke out to a large 31-16 lead by the 6:27 mark.
Also contributing to a strong opening frame was sophomore Carnicha Bellinger with eight of Newberry's first 13 points. Bellinger and Frasier proved that the leading scorers from the past two seasons can co-exist on the floor at the same time. Together the dynamic duo combined for nearly 60 percent of the Lady Indian offense.
The scarlet and gray did receive a scare in the middle portion of the second as the Lady Tigers crept to within 11 on Marcella Ridgiel's put in after being found by a cutting Ruth Waters. Ridgiel's deuce capped an 11-6 run from Edward Waters.
However on the next Newberry possession, a streaking Monica Alexander slipped a bounce pass to Tonique Frasier for an easy layup, one of Alexander's 10 assists in the game. Then an Edward Waters turnover by Claudia Joseph resulted in a long pass from Bellinger and uncontested finish from Alexander to remove any doubt of Lady Indian victory with 5:19 remaining.
Newberry College outscored Edward Waters 11-4 the rest of the way en route to it's third victory of the season.
Aisha Thornton, 22 points, and Ruth Waters, 16 points, led a struggling Lady Tiger attack that hit just 36 percent of it's shots in the second half.
Head coach Jason Brink was once again able to empty his bench with 10 different Lady Indians gracing the scoring column. Junior Latoya Sexton and freshman Brennen Long combined for eight points off the bench.
In the first game on Saturday, Presbyterian College easily handled Morris College for a 76-45 rout.
The Lady Blue Hose received solid performances from Amy Jones and Morgan Johnson. Jones finished with 15 points and Johnson 11, while Lea Smith churned out 15 from the bench.
Lady Hornets' forward Amil Rodgers cranked out a double double with 16 points along with 13 boards and April Drakeford notched 15 points, shooting 7-10 from the free throw line.
The Newberry women's squad next plays Tuesday, November 21, in Spartanburg for a 6 p.m. match with Converse College.
